Streamlining Payroll setup

Overview

Context

Employees currently have no way to manage country-specific payroll data in Workday, leading to gaps and potential errors. This project aimed to enable ESS users and admins to add, edit, and remove payroll data directly within Workday, bridging gaps with external payroll vendors, ensuring compliance and delivering a seamless, self-service experience.

Approach

goal

To address the gaps in country-specific payroll data, we designed a solution that empowers both ESS users and admins to manage payroll data directly within Workday, reducing manual effort and providing a seamless experience.

Defining the MVP

i Partnered with PM, Jess Nguyen, to narrow the scope and identify the core features for launch. This task flow helped us visualize how employees manage payroll data in Workday and align on what was essential for the MVP: viewing, editing, and validating payroll data directly in one place.

Design & Implementation

Designing Flexible Card Variations

One of the toughest challenges in this project was designing card components flexible enough to support a wide range of form types, starting with 13 countries and eventually scaling to 86. Some countries have up to 40 unique forms, so I explored multiple card structures that could adapt to different layouts, record types, and levels of complexity while keeping the design system consistent and easy to maintain.

Localizing for Global Usability

I adapted the designs to support all 13 launch countries, including LTR languages like English, Dutch, Spanish, and German, as well as RTL languages such as Arabic and Hebrew. This required mirroring layouts, icons, and element alignment to ensure usability and consistency across all language directions.

Creating Responsive Breakpoint Guidelines

At the end of the project, I partnered closely with our developers to define breakpoint standards that made the experience responsive across mobile, tablet, and desktop. This ensured the additional payroll data feature remained accessible, consistent, and easy to use on any device.
